GIRLS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK : Cindy Kuragami

Few high school tennis players have dominated their leagues as thoroughly as Kuragami has ruled the Orange League. She won her fourth consecutive league championship Thursday by defeating Brea-Olinda’s Rachel Buenviaje, 6-0, 6-0. Kuragami never lost a set in four years of league singles play and her only regular-season loss came when she was a freshman. Her overall record is 191-1. This season in league play, Kuragami, who was the eighth-ranked 16-and-under player in Southern California last year, only lost six games. “It just didn’t seem as much of a challenge this year,” said Kuragami, whose yearly challenge comes Nov. 17 in the Southern Section individual championships. She has been eliminated in the third round, a match short of the round of 16, in each of the past three years. Kuragami, a 16-year-old with a grade-point average above 4.0, plans to apply to Ivy League schools such as Brown, Yale and Harvard.

Misty Hartung, a Cypress volleyball player who had 19 kills in a five-game victory over Esperanza Tuesday and 15 kills in a three-game victory over Loara Thursday. The Centurions completed a perfect Empire League season with a 10-0 record.

Martha Pinto, a Katella cross-country runner who finished three miles in 17 minutes 51 seconds to win her fourth consecutive Empire League championship Thursday.

Molly Romm, who defeated Noriko Hopkins of Laguna Hills, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), to win the Pacific Coast League singles championship Thursday.
