Hugh McPhillips; Soap Opera Actor

Hugh McPhillips, winner of a 1980 Emmy award for a guest appearance on “Days of Our Lives” and a recurrent member of the cast of “The Young and the Restless,” another perennial daytime television favorite, has died of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

His former wife, Rosemary, said this week he died Oct. 31 in a Sherman Oaks hospital of the severe injuries suffered in the Aug. 22 crash.

McPhillips, who was appearing in Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline” at the Chandler Studio in North Hollywood at the time of the accident, had been seen over the years in films and network television and for 20 years was a producer-director for NBC-TV in New York. He was nominated twice for an Emmy as best daytime director for his work on “The Doctors.”

In Los Angeles, he appeared at several small theaters, generally in character roles.

On “The Young and the Restless” he was seen regularly as Andre, the maitre d’ at the Colonade Room.

His survivors include two sons, two daughters and a brother.
