THE SIDELINES : No. 11 Virginia Likely to Get Invitation From Fiesta Bowl
The Fiesta Bowl is hoping to invite 11th-ranked Virginia to play in its Jan. 1 game here.
“The possibility of getting Virginia is really good,” John Junker, the Fiesta’s executive director, said. “We’re talking about a team that has been No. 1 more weeks than any other.”
The Cavaliers (7-1) fell from the top of the Associated Press poll after last week’s 41-38 loss to Georgia Tech. Virginia had been No. 1 for four weeks.
Bowl bids cannot be officially extended until Nov. 24, but most deals are made at least a week in advance.
Fiesta officials said they hope to have their pairing set by Sunday.
