NOTEBOOK : Vaqueros Go After 7th Win in Row

The Glendale College football team, victorious in six consecutive games, figures to get its first test in weeks Saturday when the Vaqueros play Moorpark at Moyse Field in a game that will probably determine the winner of the Western State Conference Northern Division.

Moorpark (7-1 overall, 6-1 in the Western State Conference, 3-0 in the division) has lost only to No. 1-ranked Bakersfield. The Raiders are led by running back Freddie Bradley, who has rushed for 1,686 yards this season.

Glendale (6-2, 6-1, 3-0) is led by running back Bobby Webster, who has gained 1,126 yards.

Playing for pride: A season of firsts ends Saturday for the Occidental College football team when the Tigers play Pomona-Pitzer.

For the first time in Dale Widolff’s nine-year tenure as Occidental’s coach, the Tigers’ regular-season finale will have no bearing on the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship or playoff considerations.

The Tigers suffered one of the most lopsided losses in their history when they were beaten by Redlands, 52-14, last week at Redlands.

“We have not played run defense well all year,” Widolff said. “Of all the matchups going into the game, that was the biggest one. It lived up to what I feared it would.”

Sunk: The Glendale High water polo team fell short of the Pacific League title last weekend in a 13-11 loss to Muir. The Dynamiters thus qualified for the Southern Section playoffs seeded No. 2, while Hoover, which defeated Crescenta Valley, 13-11, made the playoffs as the Pacific League’s No. 3 team.

Fast track: Margarito Casillas of Hoover and Sarah MacDougall of Crescenta Valley won individual cross-country titles last week at the Pacific League championships at Crescenta Valley Park.

Casillas clocked 15 minutes 54 seconds over the three-mile course to lead the Tornadoes to their fourth consecutive boys’ title.

MacDougall ran 19:41 over the same course to become the first Crescenta Valley girl to win a league championship.

Froylan Sanchez of St. Francis won the boys’ title at the San Fernando Valley League championships at Griffith Park in 15:15 over the 2.9-mile course.

The Glendale College men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete for a berth in the junior college state meet in the Southern California Regional championships at Irvine Regional Park on Friday and the Occidental College cross-country teams will vie for a berth Saturday in the NCAA Division III nationals at the Far Western Regionals at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.
