Mark Carlson, assistant softball coach at San Clemente High School last season, has been named to replace Joe Miller as the school’s baseball coach, Athletic Director Jim McNaught announced Wednesday.

Carlson, 42, played second base on Chapman College’s NCAA Division II championship team in 1968 and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins. He played in the Twins’ minor league system for three years.

At Don Lugo High School in Chino, Carlson coached a junior varsity softball team that won 34 consecutive games from 1988-89. He also was the school’s varsity tennis coach from 1985-86. He teaches mathematics and economics at Don Lugo and will be a walk-on coach at San Clemente.
