HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Royal Opens With Sweep of Buena

Wende Brown recorded 19 kills and four stuff blocks Thursday night to lead the Royal High girls’ volleyball team to a 15-1, 16-14, 15-13 victory over Buena in a first-round match of the Southern Section 5-A Division playoffs at Buena.

Jennifer Hamilton added 17 kills and six blocks for the Highlanders (15-2), the Marmonte League runners-up who have lost to only first-place Thousand Oaks.

Also for Royal, Joanna Delany had 32 assists and Tracey Tahy had seven digs and 11 service points. Stacy Kaufmann added 11 service points and three aces.

In other Southern Section first-round matches:

Thousand Oaks d. Dos Pueblos, 17-15, 15-8, 15-4--Thousand Oaks, seeded No. 7 in the Southern Section 5-A, was led by Erikka Gulbranson with eight kills and 13 digs in the match at Thousand Oaks.

Aimee Stone added 11 kills for Thousand Oaks (20-3).

Moorpark d. Santa Ynez, 16-14, 15-8, 14-16, 15-10--Courtney Foreman had 12 kills and Jessica Donalson added 10 to lead fifth-seeded Moorpark (15-0) in a 2-A match at Moorpark.

Darcy added eight kills for Moorpark and Soli Barrera added 45 assists.

Calabasas d. Arroyo, 6-15, 11-15, 15-5, 16-14, 15-1--Kristi Thomson had 18 kills for Calabasas (7-7) in a 2-A match.

Shannon Yamasaki had 38 assists and 10 aces for Calabasas.

CITY SECTION

El Camino Real d. Taft, 15-1, 15-2, 15-12--Jessica Dinaberg had seven kills to lead El Camino Real in a 4-A quarterfinal match at El Camino Real.

Jenny Berger and Rachel Berger each added six kills for El Camino Real.

Chatsworth d. Venice, 15-10, 15-1, 15-6--Chatsworth advanced to the City 4-A semifinals with a victory at home.

Heather Gorman had nine kills, and Lisa Koven added seven for Chatsworth (13-2).
