COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Freshman Duo Leads Oxnard, 84-83

A pair of freshmen from the Midwest combined for 40 points in Oxnard College’s basketball opener Friday night, a victorious outing against San Diego City College, 84-83.

Tim Thomas from South Bend, Ind., had 23, and Chicago product Michael Talley 17 in the game at Santa Clara High’s Friedrich Pavilion, Oxnard’s home court.

Thomas’ two free throws with 15 seconds remaining gave Oxnard an 84-80 lead, enough to withstand a last-second three-point basket.

Forward Burl Irby had 19 points and was the second-leading scorer for Oxnard, which struggled from the free-throw line (30 for 47).

Oxnard, which has only nine players, played with seven because one player was injured and another was benched because of disciplinary reasons.

Moorpark 91, Fullerton 79--Guards Sam Crawford and Damian Wilson combined for 41 points to lead Moorpark to a season-opening first-round victory in the Mt. SAC Tipoff tournament.

Crawford, the state leader in assists last season, had 12 to go with 19 points. Freshman Wilson had 22 points to top all Moorpark scorers.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 103, Mira Costa 30--Five players scored in double figures for Valley in an opener at home.

Forwards Claudia Rocha and Ericka Miller led Valley with 18 and 17 points.

Guard Tisa Rush had 15 points and eight steals. Reserves Roz Linton (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Jeannette Velasco (10 points) also reached double figures.

Pierce 61, Cypress 43--Yolanda Davidian scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Pierce to a home victory in its opener.

Riverside 89, Antelope Valley 78--Paula Page, a 6-foot-1 freshman center from Quartz Hill, made a strong debut for visiting Antelope Valley with 32 points and 23 rebounds. Page was 12 of 24 from the field and made eight of nine free throws and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds.

Golden West 90, Moorpark 53--All-State point guard Bits Sirchia scored 22 points, including four three-point baskets, for host Golden West.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cuesta d. Pierce, 10-15, 15-0, 15-11, 15-8--Sabrina Clark had 21 kills as the Cougars clinched the Western State Conference title with a 16-1 mark. Pierce fell to 15-2 in conference play.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 3, Oxnard 0--Vicky Wagenbach scored a goal in each half to lead Moorpark to a home Western State Conference victory.

Goalie Denise Duarte had three saves to record her 11th shutout for Moorpark (12-1-4, 5-1-1).
