Florida State Tries to Ease Up on Cincinnati in 70-21 Win

Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden watched helplessly as the score mounted against Cincinnati’s outmanned Bearcats.

Try as he might to hold the 12th-ranked Seminoles in check, Florida State buried Cincinnati, 70-21, Saturday.

“We really tried to shut it down in the second half,” said Bowden, whose Seminoles (7-2) led, 28-0, after one quarter and, 49-7, at halftime.

Bowden used fifth-string and scout team players at the finish.

Lawrence Dawsey, Amp Lee and Paul Moore each scored two touchdowns for Florida State. Dawsey caught seven passes for 141 yards by halftime.

Quarterback Casey Weldon completed 14 of 20 passes for 217 yards, playing only a half.

Terrell Buckley returned an interception 83 yards for a touchdown and set up another score with a long punt return.

The Seminoles scored on their first nine possessions and punted only once.

“I’ve been on (Murphy’s) side of the ball,” Bowden said. “They reminded me of us in 1976. Don’t forget, four years later we were undefeated.”

Cincinnati (1-9) did amass a season-high 459 yards.
