Point Loma Nazarene Wins Basketball Debut

Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s basketball team overwhelmed visiting Pacific Christian, 107-66, in a nonconference season opener Saturday night at the Crusaders’ homecoming celebration.

Five PLNC players scored in double figures, with Rusty Fallin contributing 22 points, and teammates Mark Bulgin and Donnie Buettner adding 19 apiece. It was Pacific Christian’s (6-1) first loss.

Christian Heritage lost two games in the Colorado Christian round-robin tournament, 92-74, against St. Mary of the Plains, Kan. and 90-77, to Colorado Christian, which won the tournament. Senior center Rob Meeter scored 45 in the two games for Christian Heritage (1-2).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Aztecs had little trouble winning 15-10, 15-11, 15-11 against Utah (7-21, 0-10) in a Western Athletic Conference match in Salt Lake City. Angela Martin and Gracie Schutt paced SDSU (21-10, 6-4) with 16 kills apiece.

TENNIS

Defending champion Jose Luis Noriega of USD was upset by Georgia’s Patricio Arnold, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Clay Court Championships in Panama City, Fla. Arnold then defeated South Carolina’s Louie Gloria, 6-2, 6-3, to reach today’s finals against Mississippi’s Nick Barone.

CROSS COUNTRY

Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s team finished 12th at the NAIA national championships Kenosha, Wis. Senior Rick Penman finished 42nd in 26:03 to lead PLNC. Junior Doug Ravasdy was 62nd and sophomore Scott Lardner was 89th for PLNC. Junior Vanessa Couch, running as an individual performer for PLNC, finished 29th in 18:42.

The UC San Diego men finished 20th in the NCCA Division III Cross-Country team championships at Grinnell, Iowa. UCSD’s Stefan Wynn ran a 26:15 on the 5,000 meter course to finish 88th individually. In the women’s meet, UCSD’s Denise McFayden ran an 18:53 on the 3,000-meter course for 45th place. The UCSD women did not enter the team event.

BOWLING

San Diego’s Wendy Macpherson came from the No. 4 spot to win the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour $100,000 Sam’s Town Invitational. Macpherson beat Jeanne Maiden 203-202 in the title match to win her fourth career title and $20,000.

Macpherson beat Debbie Bennett 241-228 in the first game, knocked off Michelle Mullen 220-179 and beat Donna Adamek 237-219, to reach the title match.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC San Diego defeated visiting Occidental, 75-59, in a nonconference game. Carrie Young and Kathleen Alvarez led five Tritons (1-1) in doubles figures with 14 points apiece.
