A Chatsworth man suffered severe head injuries over the weekend when the horse he was riding bolted into traffic and was hit by a car, police said.

The horse was killed and the rider, Stephen Doughty Eason, 27, was in critical condition Sunday at Nu-Med Regional Medical Center in Canoga Park.

Eason was riding on a dirt road parallel to Rinaldi Street on Saturday evening when the horse ran into traffic on De Soto Avenue, Los Angeles Police Officer Dennis Smith said.

The horse ran across two southbound lanes and was hit by a car driven by William Ray Crosson, 61, of Chatsworth, Smith said. The impact of the crash killed the horse and knocked Eason headfirst onto the pavement.

Smith said the horse had a history of being difficult to control.
