SOUTHERN SECTION WATER POLO PLAYOFFS : No. 8 El Toro to Battle Wilson for the Championship Tonight

El Toro High School will try to win its third consecutive Southern Section water polo championship and its first in Division 4-A when it plays Long Beach Wilson at 8:45 tonight at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Also played today at Belmont Plaza will be section finals in 2-A (4 p.m.) and 3-A (5:30).

El Toro, 25-3 and the No. 8-seeded team, won Division 3-A titles in 1988 and ’89 before moving to 4-A this year. El Toro defeated wild-card qualifier Capistrano Valley, 3-2, in one semifinal. Second-seeded Wilson (22-6) defeated Corona del Mar, 8-4, in the other.

Wilson is led by senior two-meter man Julian Werts and senior goalie Nick Fullerton. El Toro is led by senior two-meter man J.P. Mathot.

In the Division 2-A final, second-seeded Costa Mesa (18-9) will play top-seeded South Pasadena (25-4). Neither team had an easy time getting to the finals: Costa Mesa defeated Dos Pueblos, 14-13, in overtime in one semifinal and South Pasadena defeated Santa Maria, 12-11, in the other.

In Division 3-A, top-seeded Riverside Poly (23-7) will face No. 3-seeded La Serna (17-1). Poly defeated Miraleste, 9-6, and La Serna defeated Muir, 13-10, in the semifinals.
