WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Dee Dee Davis scored 20 pints and Kieishsha Garnes scored 16 as San Diego State (1-0) defeated McNeese State 101-56 in the opening round of the St. Mary’s Invitational in Moraga. Tameka McGlawn led the Aztecs with 13 rebounds and Liza Carrillo, from Point Loma, added 12.
SDSU led 46-24 at halftime.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Penn State, ranked sixth in the nation in the Tachikara coaches’ poll, defeated San Diego State, 15-8, 15-4, 15-11, in the first round of the Whataburger Classic in Austin, Tex.
Penn State improved to 41-0. SDSU, ranked 19th, is 21-11. The Aztecs play the loser of the Texas-Notre Dame in a consolation-round match today.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Christian Heritage converted nine of 12 free throws in the final six minutes in a 68-65 victory over Christ College Irvine (0-3) in the opening round of the UC San Diego Triton Tip-Off Tournament.
Jeff Martin scored 17 points and Vernaldo Butler 15 for Christian Heritage, which set a school record for fewest field-goal attempts (39) in a game. The Hawks (2-3) also snapped a three-game losing streak.
Christian Heritage led 42-33 with 13:11 left, but poor free-throw shooting by the Hawks allowed CCI to tie the game, 55-55, with 6:02 left. The Hawks finished 29 of 47 from the free-throw line.
Senior center Gordon McNeill hit a 15-foot baseline jump shot with one second to play to give UC San Diego a 94-92 victory over Occidental in the UCSD Triton Tip-Off Tournament. McNeill finished with 12 points. Tim Rapp led the Tritons with 30 points and Rick Batt had 15. Tom Shawcroft added 14. The Tritons (3-0) play Christian Heritage (2-3) tonight at 8 in the championship game.
