COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Volleyball Team is Eliminated

Ana Cristina Periera had 24 kills and her sister, Ana Carolina Periera, added 23 kills as West Texas State defeated Chapman College, 15-10, 15-7, 7-15, 15-7, in the NCAA Division II South Central Region women’s volleyball championship Friday in Canyon, Tex.

Top-ranked West Texas State (35-1) advances to the eight-team championship at a site to be determined. Tara Christensen had eight kills for 14th-ranked Chapman, which closed the season at 22-14.

In the Titan Gatorade women’s basketball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 68, Cal State Northridge 35--Senior center Genia Miller scored 24 points, had 11 rebounds and blocked eight shots to lead the Titans past the Matadores in Titan Gym.

Junior point guard Michelle Hennessey, playing her first game with the Titans, set school records with 13 assists and eight steals, breaking previous marks of 11 assists (by Jeannine Battaglia) and seven steals (by Jill Matyuch) set last season.

Fullerton plays Oregon State at 8 tonight in the championship. Oregon State defeated Southwest Texas State, 62-45, in the other first-round game.

At the Idaho women’s basketball tournament:

Portland State 69, UC Irvine 67--Kari Kockler scored 14 points and Michele Hughes scored 13 to lead Portland State. Jenny Lee scored 20 and Kathy Lizarraga scored 13 for UC Irvine.
