SOUTHWEST ROUNDUP : Lewis and Texas A&M; Still Have TCU’s Number, 56-10

Texas A&M; continued its dominance over Texas Christian with a 56-10 Southwest Conference victory Saturday at College Station, Tex.

Darren Lewis gained 113 yards in 23 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Aggies beat the Horned Frogs for the 18th consecutive time before accepting an invitation to play Western Athletic Conference champion Brigham Young in the Holiday Bowl Dec. 29 at San Diego.

The Aggies piled up 537 yards in offense to set a school single-season record of 5,304 yards--the third-best total in conference history.

“We came out very focused,” Lewis said. “They came out prepared at first, but we wanted it more. We worked hard and we came out with a bang.”

Texas A&M;, 8-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the SWC, concludes its regular season at Texas next week.

TCU (5-6, 4-5) finished its season with five consecutive defeats.

Arkansas 42, SMU 29--E.D. Jackson rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns and Quinn Grovey passed for two touchdowns as the Razorbacks (3-8, 1-7) ended their most frustrating season ever with the victory over Southern Methodist in an SWC game at Dallas.

“Winning our first conference game doesn’t mean anything,” said first-year Coach Jack Crowe, whose team ended a seven-game losing streak. “A loss today would have meant something.”

Jackson scored on runs of 13 and 36 yards.

Grovey completed 13 of 17 passes for 219 yards and connected on touchdown pass plays of four yards to Kirk Botkin and 53 yards to Derek Russell.

Mike Romo completed 39 of 50 passes for 358 yards for SMU (1-10, 0-8), which was playing its last game under Coach Forrest Gregg.

Romo was sacked nine times.
