In a rematch of last year’s regional final, Corona del Mar High School will play San Jose Lynbrook in the Southern California Regional Division I championship match at 7:30 tonight at Corona del Mar.

In the Division II regional final, La Habra will play host to Lakewood St. Joseph at 7:30 tonight. The regional winners advance to the state championship games Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Corona del Mar (26-1) lost to Lynbrook (30-5) in five games in last year’s regional final.

Sea King Coach Dale Flickinger said his players have one thing on their minds--revenge.

“I’m glad we’re playing Lynbrook,” he said. “Losing to them last year will definitely serve as a motivator.”

Corona del Mar already has avenged one tournament loss this year. The Sea Kings swept Mira Costa in the Southern Section 5-A finals two weeks ago. Mira Costa beat Corona del Mar in the 1989 Southern Section final.

Corona del Mar has been led by Lara Carlsen, a 5-foot-11 middle blocker, and Tracy Schriber, a 5-5 outside hitter. But the Sea Kings used a balanced attack, led by middle blocker Tahlia Wagner’s 16 kills, in a five-game victory over Poway in the second round Saturday.

Lynbrook features middle blocker Michelle Wagner, a 5-11 junior who’s also one of the top basketball players in the northern section. Wagner had 21 kills and 18 digs in Lynbrook’s second-round victory over Vacaville.

Other top players for Lynbrook include setter Dawn Hill and outside hitters Julie Dare and Summer Love.

La Habra enters the Division II final with a 43-match winning streak. But the Highlanders could have their hands full with St. Joseph, which rallied from a two-game deficit to beat San Diego University in the second round.

La Habra is led by Missy Clements, a 5-11 middle blocker, and Zrinka Kristich, a 6-5 outside hitter. St. Joseph’s top players are Erin Balderama and Jaime Torromeo.

Corona del Mar has played La Habra and St. Joseph this year. The Sea Kings lost to La Habra in the finals of the Orange County Championships and beat St. Joseph in the Southern Section 5-A semifinals two weeks ago.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if St. Joseph beats La Habra,” Flickinger said.
