Portland State Beats Irvine Women
UC Irvine lost to Portland State, 80-70, in the championship game of the Disneyland Freedom Bowl women’s basketball tournament Saturday.
Karla Leary scored 16 points to lead Portland State (3-1). Michele Hughes and Renae Aschoff each scored 13 points and Laurie Northrop had 14 for Portland State.
Kathy Lizarraga scored a game-high 18 points to lead Irvine (1-3). Yvonne Catala and Kim Cox each scored 12, Shurrell Johnson had 11 and Jenny Lee 10 for Irvine.
In the consolation final, Debra Taylor scored 19 points to lead Cleveland State to a 63-52 victory over Monmouth. Lynette Taylor scored 13 points for Cleveland State (1-2). Beth DiRenzo had 15 points for Monmouth (0-3).
