COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Men Lose to UC Davis

Stephen Smith’s 21 points and Matt Cordova’s 19 led UC Davis to a 78-66 victory over Chapman College in a nonconference basketball game Saturday at Davis.

The score was tied, 36-36, at halftime, but Davis (4-1) pulled away with its strong defense.

Frantz Reyes scored 21 points, Beau Pack 17 and Roger Middleton 12 to lead Chapman (3-2)

“We didn’t execute the techniques needed to win,” Chapman Coach Bob Boyd said. “I thought that was the difference in the game.”

In the Mid America Nazarene men’s basketball tournament in Olathe, Kan.:

Southern California College 123, Central Methodist (Missouri) 118--SCC scored 69 points in the second half to win the championship. After trailing most of the way, SCC took the lead on Bryan Moore’s dunk with 6 1/2 minutes left. Center Jeff Bickmore had 34 points and 12 rebounds for SCC (5-2). Mike Henjum had 27 points and was named the tournament MVP. Elbert Davis added 25 points. Bickmore and Henjum were selected to the all-tournament team.

At the Sunbird Invitational women’s basketball tournament at Fresno Pacific:

Grand Canyon University 89, Southern California College 58--Center Suzanne Backos scored 20 points for SCC (3-4) in the consolation championship game. Teammate Kristen Bevis had 12 points and five assists. Grand Canyon (4-3) led, 55-21, at halftime.

Liz Koch, Devon Coate-Sandlin and Trishna Coleman each won two events as the UC Irvine women’s swimming team defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 171-108, in a dual meet at Heritage Park.

Koch won the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes 18.79 seconds and the 100 butterfly (1:02.18), Coate-Sandlin won the 500 freestyle (5:33.19) and the 200 individual medley (2:20.44) and Coleman won the one- and three-meter diving competition. Lisa Williams won the 100 freestyle (56.0) and was second in the 50 freestyle for Irvine (3-0).

The Irvine men’s swim team also defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 184-111, in a dual meet at Heritage Park.
