A 32-year-old San Diego man was fatally shot and a Ramona woman critically wounded in what sheriff’s deputies are calling an attempted murder-suicide in Ramona.

The dead man’s name was not released, pending notification of relatives, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Manny Castillo. Melissa Rae Dewey, 27, was listed in critical condition at Palomar Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds in the stomach and arms, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to Dewey’s apartment in the 100 block of 7th Street in Ramona at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Castillo said. When they arrived, a conscious Dewey told them her ex-boyfriend had showed up, and they began arguing, Castillo said.

Dewey told deputies her ex-boyfriend shot her before turning the gun on himself, Castillo said. She was taken by Life Flight to the hospital, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

A .22-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene, Castillo said.
