Bob Quinn, who won a World Series in his first season as general manager of the Cincinnati Reds, was selected Major League Executive of the Year by The Sporting News.

“This award is the crown jewel for executives in our industry,” Quinn said today. “And it is particularly meaningful because it is awarded by a vote of my peers.”

Quinn engineered trades that brought reliever Randy Myers, first baseman Hal Morris and outfielders Billy Hatcher and Glenn Braggs to the Reds.

Quinn joined the Reds on Oct. 13, 1989, after serving in several executive capacities for the New York Yankees. His first move was to name Lou Piniella as manager of the club.

The Reds led the National League West from the start and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in six games for the pennant. Cincinnati then stunned Oakland by winning the World Series in four games.
