Quarterback Dan McGwire was chosen Most Valuable Player of the San Diego State football team at the Aztec awards banquet Monday night. McGwire, who completed 270 of 449 passes (60%) for 3,833 yards and 27 touchdowns, finished fourth in the nation in passing efficiency (148.6) and fourth in total offense with 3,664 yards. He also set an NCAA record for lowest percentage of passes intercepted in a season (1.56%).

McGwire, linebacker Lou Foster and kicker Andy Trakas earned the Captains’ Award, and offensive guard Derek Sang got the President’s Award for academics and athletics.

Trakas was the Most Valuable Special Teams player, Foster the Most Inspirational, center Kevin Macon the Most Improved and also the Most Improved scholastically.

Junior running back Beveren Means won the offensive scout team award, and linebacker Ty Morrison won the defensive scout team award.

Outstanding players at their positions were Nick Subis (offensive line), Larry Maxey (offensive backs), Patrick Rowe (receivers), Pio Sagapolutele (defensive line), Robert Griffith (linebackers) and Gary Taylor (defensive backs).

Rowe finished the year as the nation’s leader in receiving yards per game with 126.55.
