Man Is Shot, Killed Near Athens

A Los Angeles man who was walking along a sidewalk in an unincorporated area near Athens was fatally wounded Tuesday night when he was shot numerous times in the back, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputy Gabe Ramirez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said Charles Sweed, 28, was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center. Sweed had just left a house he was visiting in the 11200 block of South New Hampshire Avenue about 9 p.m. when he was attacked by an unknown assailant, sheriff’s officials said.

Ramirez said the motive for the slaying was unknown, and no arrests had been made as of Wednesday afternoon. Homicide detectives from the Lennox substation were investigating.
