A swimmer who has been exposing the use of drugs by East German athletes said the country was far ahead of others in the research and use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Raik Hannemann gave more details about his use of a nasal spray that has the same effect as anabolic steroids. He said East German experts tried to develop drugs that would be undetectable.
Hannemann, writing in the Berlin newspaper, Kurier am Abend, said that East German experts considered experiments with the spray “top secret” and never released the results of blood tests on athletes given the spray.
