Sailing Into the Holidays

Most cities launch annual holiday parades. Because Ventura and Oxnard are coastal communities they’ll celebrate afloat, with two boat parades in the next nine days.

First, Channel Islands Harbor’s 25th anniversary will be celebrated Saturday with a “Silver Bells” theme. About 40 ornamented boats will participate in the parade, which is expected to attract about 20,000 spectators.

As in previous years, Santa Claus will be busy, not only serving as parade grand marshal but also taking to the skies with his reindeer, trailing behind a helicopter.

The 7 p.m. parade will cover a two-mile circular path and enthusiasts should line up along South Harbor Boulevard, Peninsula Drive or Victoria Avenue. Organizers recommend arriving early because parking is limited.

On Dec. 15, Ventura Harbor will shine with the 14th Annual Ventura Parade of Lights. At least 30 boats decorated with festive lights will cruise the harbor perimeter from 7 to 9 p.m. Spectators can gather in Harbor Village, by the port district office or at other spots along the parade route.

Santa returns with Mrs. Claus aboard the lead boat, greeting the crowd to the beat of “Rock Around the Clock,” which will be performed by an Elvis Presley impersonator.

Ventura Port District officials expect several thousand to turn out; early arrival is recommended.
