TOUGH TIMES: Jim Colletto, Purdue’s new football coach (C4), cut his coaching teeth at Cal State Fullerton, where he nearly had them knocked out. From 1975 to 1979, playing two-thirds of their games on the road, the Titans went 17-38-1 before Colletto took an assistant’s job at UCLA. . . . “Those five years were a difficult time,” he says. How difficult? In 1975, trailing the University of Southern Mississippi at halftime 35-0, he told his team: “If you guys keep playin’ like you’ve played, you’re gonna get beat 70 to nothin’.” Final score: 70-0.
