OXNARD : Reward Proposed for Graffiti Tip

Share

The Oxnard City Council is expected to present a $250 reward Tuesday to a resident who helped police arrest a suspected graffiti vandal.

City Manager Vernon Hazen has recommended that the city give the reward to Michael Pendlebury, who reported a 16-year-old boy on Oct. 18 allegedly spray-painting graffiti on a wall on the 2000 block of Mono Street.

Pendlebury held the teen-ager until police arrived. If convicted of the misdemeanor offense, the teen-ager, whose name was not released because of his age, could face a maximum penality of six months in jail and a $500 fine.

With the number of complaints about graffiti increasing, Mayor Nao Takasugi suggested several months ago that the city reward residents for helping police catch vandals.

Hazen supported the proposal, but said it will likely take another six weeks before the council formally adopts a graffiti reward policy.

Once the policy is adopted, Hazen said the reward can be approved administratively without the council’s approval.
