Two teen-agers who committed three robberies, then became involved in a high-speed chase in which an accomplice apparently committed suicide were sentenced Monday to state prison.

Jonathan Arrington and Hubert Phillips, both 19 and from San Diego, were also ordered to repay $681.75 each to the robbery victims.

Arrington, who pleaded guilty to the Aug. 28 hold-ups, received a sentence of 12 years, while Phillips, who pleaded no contest, was sentenced to seven years.

The robberies included the hold-ups of Fred Bray, the night auditor at the Best Western Motel in Escondido, Donut Star baker Rey Ouk a block away, and Vista taxi driver Judee Davis.

Superior Court Judge William Mudd told Arrington that he is one “of the most dangerous young men” he has sentenced. He said Arrington had no remorse for the hold-ups.

Mudd said that he suspected the trio had a suicide pact together, but that only 17-year-old Khalil Mohammed carried it out. Mohammed shot himself in the head and was found in the getaway car that was abandoned after the chase near Southwest High School on Aug. 28.

The judge ordered both defendants to serve the first part of their sentence in the California Youth Authority. Later they will be transferred to state prison.
