HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Dafney Scores 29 to Lead Taft

Taft High led by as many as 23 points midway through the third period but had to hold off a Dorsey rally in a 78-74 victory Tuesday in a nonleague City Section game at Taft.

Senior swingman Eric Dafney scored a season- and game-high 29 points and added nine rebounds to key the upset for Taft (6-3). Junior point guard Casey Sheahan added 19 points and six assists.

Taft was whistled for 37 fouls, and four Toreador players, including three starters, fouled out.

Dorsey, which entered the season ranked ninth overall in the City by The Times, made 23 of 39 free throws and outscored Taft, 22-11, in the fourth quarter to make it close.

Senior forward Cornell Hill added 12 points for Taft.

In other games:

Thousand Oaks 81, Huntington Park 52--Chris Loll scored 21 points and Brian Capella had 10 assists to lead Thousand Oaks (4-0) in the first round of the Bosco Tech tournament.

Thousand Oaks trailed, 15-7, in the first quarter but outscored Huntington Park in the remaining three periods. Eleven players scored for Thousand Oaks, including Scott Peterson (10 points).

Antelope Valley 71, Crespi 68--Senior point guard Brock Chase returned from a three-week layoff because of an injured ankle and scored a team-high 21 points to lead Antelope Valley in a nonleague game at home.

Raynell Dunbar added 18 points for Antelope Valley (4-5), which has won four of its past five games.

Off-guard John Curtin scored a team-high 21 points for Crespi, which has lost three games in a row to fall to 4-5. Randy Coleman added 15 points for Crespi.

Saugus 50, East Bakersfield 36--Senior center Greg Yumbar scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead host Saugus (6-2) in a nonleague game.

Glendale 56, Burroughs 52--Jason Harper scored 18 points to lead host Glendale (4-4) in a nonleague game.

Bishop Amat 67, Alemany 62--Will Burr scored a team-high 23 points for Alemany, but the Indians were outscored, 20-11, in the fourth quarter of the nonleague game at home.

Palmdale 91, South Bakersfield 77--Chris DeGlopper, a 6-5 senior swingman, had a game-high 35 points and 17 rebounds to lead host Palmdale in a nonleague game.

Harvard 89, L.A. Baptist 64-- Markus Puhvel scored 20 points and had nine rebounds and Iheanyi Uwaezuoke scored 17 points and added six assists for Harvard (5-2).

Alex Pistone scored a team-high 20 points for L.A. Baptist.

Kennedy 72, Roosevelt 64--Joe Wyatt, a sophomore, scored 15 points and senior center Athesis Harris scored a team-high 22 to lead Kennedy (5-5) in a first-round game of the Hamilton tournament.
