BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : El Toro Wins on Johnson’s Free Throws

Rob Johnson made two free throws with 33 seconds remaining and El Toro High School held on to defeat Huntington Beach, 80-79, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Huntington Beach.

Johnson, who scored 24 of his game-high 31 points in the second half, made both ends of a one-and-one to give the Chargers an 80-79 lead.

Tommy Walden then missed a 19-foot jumper for Huntington Beach in the closing seconds. Matt Montgomery got the rebound but time ran out before he could get off a shot.

Johnson added 19 rebounds.

Mustapha Abdi had 29 points and 11 rebounds for the Oilers (5-2), who led by as many as 12 points in the first half. El Toro caught up midway through the fourth quarter.

In other nonleague play:

Santa Margarita 69, Eisenhower 65--Dan Bathey scored 28 points and had 12 rebounds and Santa Margarita outscored Eisenhower, 24-10, in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory at Santa Margarita (7-2).

Laguna Hills 81, Santa Ana Valley 50--Paul LaMott scored 23 points and teammate Justin Ross added 22 as host Laguna Hills improved to 4-2.

Los Alamitos 66, Long Beach Wilson 63--Brian Hakala made two free throws with 16 seconds left to seal the victory for host Los Alamitos (7-4). Hakala scored 19 points and Steve Carbone 11 and Jason Cunningham 10 for the Griffins.

Katella 83, Anaheim 65--Roger Arias scored 23 points for visiting Katella (5-3). Rudy Fernandez scored 20 points for Anaheim (5-4).

Ontario 46, Villa Park 38--Matt Gibson and Ryan McArthur each scored 10 for Villa Park (2-6).

In the San Dieguito Tournament:

Newport Harbor 78, Oceanside 39--Justin McIntee scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Mark McAnlis scored 10 points and had seven assists for Newport Harbor (5-2). Hui Nguyen scored 14 points and Mike Stipe added 12.

Vista 85, Trabuco Hills 84--Vista had a 12-point lead at halftime, increased it to 15 after three quarters and then watched as Trabuco Hills started scoring from the inside. The Mustangs eventually tied the score with less than 20 seconds remaining.

San Clemente 71, Las Vegas 49--Bill Hagedorn had 18 points, Eddie Morgan 16 points and 15 rebounds and Melvin Johnson 12 points and seven assists for San Clemente (6-2).

Dana Hills 51, Carlsbad 42--Derrick Walsh scored 17 and Keith Barnett had 14 points and 16 rebounds for Dana Hills (5-3).

In the La Sierra Academy Tournament:

Brethren Christian 72, Leffingwell Christian 48--Brandon Stott had 23 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists and Chris Fry had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Brethren Christian (5-1) in a semifinal. Brethren will play for the championship at 8 tonight against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Maranatha and La Sierra Academy.

Calvary Chapel 76, Bloomington 45--Chase Lubbock scored 22 points and John O’Brien had 25 and 17 rebounds.
