RACING NOTES : Record Handle for Hollypark: $202 Million
Total handle, which includes off-track wagering, for the fall meeting at Hollywood Park climbed a daily average 3.9% from the previous year to a record $202,155,663.
The meeting concluded Monday, and thoroughbred racing shifts today Santa Anita. (Story, C1).
The previous Hollywood Park fall meet record for combined handle was the $172,028,135 wagered in 1988.
The daily average of $5,463,667 also was a record, bettering the 1987 mean of $5,304,397.
While the extent of inter-track wagering rose, attendance comparisons showed modest declines (3.7% on-track; 3.9% overall) as did on-site handle (3.2%).
Stolen Rolls took the lead early and went on to a 2 1/2-length victory in the $59,500 Christmas Day Handicap on the grass at Calder Race Course. Gay’s Best Boy came from back in the field to edge Seasabb for second in a field of 13 3-year-olds and up.
