HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Cherry, Steele Spark Morse by Saddleback

The Morse High basketball team upset fourth-seeded Saddleback, 92-88, in overtime in the first round Wednesday of the Orange County Classic at Chapman College.

Byron Steele’s three-pointer tied the score 84-84, to send the game into overtime.

Darnell Cherry and Maurice Vickers each scored four points for Morse (6-2) in overtime.

Cherry led Morse with 29 points and Jaamar Lavender added 23.

Duis Estrella scored 26 points and Jason Register had 24 for Saddleback (8-2).

Chula Vista Tournament

Helix 86, San Dieguito 63--Helix led by just seven points (40-33) at halftime but outscored San Dieguito, 29-6, in the third quarter to lead by 30 points going into the final quarter. Derrick henry scored 21 and had eight rebounds to lead Helix (6-4). Lloyd Lake added 20 points and had eight assists and four blocks.

Chula Vista 89, Crawford 73--Chula Vista, which led, 43-31, at halftime, had five players in doulbe figures: Jerome Green (19), Shane Howell (18), Andy Duran (16), Cesar Martinez (15) and Donnie Edwards (12). Edwards had 10 rebounds and Duran had nine. Kadir Nelson led Crawford with 28 points and Rahman Anderson added 17.

Redondo Union 65, Hilltop 48--Courtenay Brown scored 20 points and had five rebounds for Hilltop. Chris White added 13 points. Ron Grim scored 19 points for Redondo, which led, 37-27, at halftime.

Mira Mesa 78, Oceanside 57--Mira Mesa, led by David Butler with 19 points and 11 rebounds, took a 33-23 halftime lead. Quantell Donigan added 13 points and Ryan Cunningham had 12 for Mira Mesa (6-4) Carl Mathis led Oceanside with 20 points.

Sweetwater Classic

San Diego 87, Mar Vista 42--J.R. Greer scored 17 points and Mike Watson had 14 for San Diego. Mar Vista was led by Mel Antunez with 16 points and Jim Gruber with 10.

Sweetwater 67, St. Augustine 52--Melvin Rushing scored 33 points for Sweetwater, which led 38-23 at halftime.

Brea Olinda Tournament

Fallbrook 85, La Habra 28--Chris Miller scored 20 points, Bob Nolan scored 16 and Steve Pack added 14 for Fallbrook. Fallbrook led, 38-10 at halftime.

Canyon Tournament

Canyon Del Oro (Tuscon) 83, Vista 75--Jason Barnes scored 34 point and Chris Johnson had 23 for Vista (3-5) in the opening round at Anaheim Hills. Canyon Del Oro, which took a 39-33 halftime lead, was led by Adam Kell with 18 points and Jason Verdugo with 16.

Chino Tournament

Alta Loma 66, Escondido 55--Damian Cephus scored 16 points, Mike Frank scored 12, and Carlos Vega had 10 for Escondido (1-4). Alta Loma (7-2) was led by David Crow with 18 points.
