A gunman escaped with about $2,000 from a currency exchange store Friday after wounding a clerk and exchanging gunfire with the store’s owner, authorities said.

The man entered the store in the 300 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard wielding a pistol in one hand and a knife in the other, said Sgt. Fred England of the San Diego Police Department.

The robber grabbed the clerk and collected $2,000 in U.S. currency as well as an unknown amount of Mexican pesos, England said.

The clerk was cut in the forehead with the knife during the struggle. He was treated at the scene for a 2-inch wound, England said.

Store owner Francisco Anzar, armed with a pistol, chased the gunman across the street and exchanged gunfire with him in back of a grocery, England said. No injuries were reported.

The gunman drove off in a late-model Ford pickup parked in front of the grocery and was last seen heading east on San Ysidro Boulevard, England said.
