HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Campbell Hall Wins on Thompkins’ Shot

C. J. Thompkins made a three-point basket with two seconds remaining to thwart a second-half comeback by North Hollywood High and give Campbell Hall a 48-47 victory in a semifinal game of the Bell-Jeff tournament Friday.

The victory kept the Vikings (11-0) unbeaten and propelled them into the final tonight at 8 against Bell-Jeff.

Campbell Hall led, 30-19, at halftime, but North Hollywood responded behind the shooting of guard Robert Hill, who led all scorers with 27 points.

The North Hollywood rally gave the Huskies a 47-45 lead until Thompkins launched his 22-foot shot to beat the buzzer.

Junior guard Austin McKellar and freshman center Alex Lopez each had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Campbell Hall.

In other boys’ games:

Bell-Jeff 65, Burbank 62--Junior forward Brian Lee scored 21 points to lead the Guards past Burbank and into the title game of their own tournament.

Burroughs 61, Monte Vista 51--Rick Mulloy scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Burroughs in a consolation semifinal of the Mt. Carmel tournament.

Mike Rossiter had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Burroughs (4-6).

Providence 67, Holy Martyrs 54--Sophomore forward Barry Dabbaghian was 10 of 14 from the field in scoring 28 points and he added nine rebounds in the Pioneers’ victory in the Ribet Christian tournament.

Canyon 84, Vista 71--Senior forward Jermaine Nixon had 26 points and senior guard Lance Moore had a school-record 18 assists in leading Canyon to the consolation final of the Anaheim Canyon tournament.

La Salle 65, Village Christian 56--David Orso scored 25 points and had 13 rebounds for Village Christian (6-6) in a semifinal of the La Salle tournament.

L. A. Baptist 48, Brentwood 39--Mark Heerema and Dan Shackelford each scored 13 points for L. A. Baptist (3-6) in a semifinal game of the Carpinteria tournament.

L. A. Baptist plays St. Joseph for the championship tonight at 8:15.

Crespi 91, L. A. Jordan 66--Senior guard John Curtin scored 26 points and senior forward Rasaan Hall added 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace Crespi to the consolation title of the Palisades tournament.

Junior guard Charles Agahjanian added 14 points and 12 assists.

Faith Baptist 113, St. Michael’s 60--All five Faith Baptist starters scored in double figures, with junior guard Alex Estrada leading all scorers with 25 points.

Estrada and junior guard Darren Wyre, who had 23 points, led the Faith Baptist attack in the third quarter, when the Contenders outscored St. Michael’s, 36-4.

Peter Rasmussen added 22 points and 18 rebounds and Fernando Garcia had 20 points.

Taft 64, South Gate 38--The Eagle Rock tournament semifinal game was called with 6:38 left in the fourth quarter when South Gate coach Tak Aoki was assessed his third technical foul.

Before the game ended, senior forward Eric Dafney scored 19 points to lead Taft into the final--against the winner of the Locke-University game--at 7 tonight.

Agoura 105, Castle Park 68--Sean Martin had 31 points and nine assists for the Chargers in a Ramona Rotary Roundball Shootout semifinal game.

Eddie Corridori added 18 points and Jonathan West 16 for Agoura (5-2).

Kennedy 65, Reseda 61--Athesis Harris scored 17 points for Kennedy (7-6) in a Birmingham tournament semifinal game. Reseda’s Marquis Burns topped all scorers with 28 points.

Grant 50, Birmingham 40--Senior forward David Garden scored 11 points for the Braves in a losing effort in the semifinals of the Birmingham tournament.

Grant advanced to the final tonight at 8:45 against Kennedy.

Notre Dame 79, Arroyo Grande 69--Forward G .C. Marcaccini combined with his brother Monte for 49 points as Notre Dame won on the road.

G. C. Marcaccini (29) scored 15 points in the first quarter before being forced to leave the game with an eye injury. He came back in the second half to score 14 more.

Arroyo Grande scored 19 of its 24 points in the second and third quarters on free throws.

Canoga Park 52, Poly 49--Trailing at the beginning of the second half, 25-18, Canoga Park went into a full-court press that resulted in a 10-2 run.

Lindsay Dunbar scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and Chris Ofstad scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

Newbury Park 77, Santa Paula 66--Chris Falzone scored 20 points and Tim Lane and Robert Fick each had 18 to pace the Panthers (4-4) in a nonleague game at Santa Paula.

George Albanez topped Santa Paula with 19.

GIRLS

Thousand Oaks 61, Channel Islands 58--Michelle Palmisano hit a three-point shot with the score tied, 54-54, in the fourth quarter to give Thousand Oaks the lead as the Lancers advanced to the championship game tonight against Palmdale in their own tournament.

Palmisano finished with 33 points.

Grant 52, Reseda 44--Senior forward Monique Young scored a career-high 30 points and had nine rebounds to lead Grant in a consolation quarterfinal game of the Bell-Jeff tournament at Los Angeles City College.

Morningside 75, North Hollywood 49--Morningside, the defending Division I state champion, extended a seven-point halftime lead over the Huskies to win easily in the semifinals of the Bell-Jeff tournament at Woodbury College.

Jacinda Sweet scored 17 points and Suzi Shimoyama and Karma Goodman had five assists and 11 rebounds for North Hollywood.

Alemany 40, Downey 26--Alemany held Downey scoreless in the first period of the consolation semifinal of the Gahr tournament. Tori McCormick led Alemany (8-6) with 22 points.

Hueneme 56, Santa Paula 54--A basket by Gina Sosa with 30 seconds to play gave Hueneme the win in a consolation semifinal game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Glendale 58, Santa Maria 51--Jennifer Dalton scored 29 points to lead Glendale in a fifth-place game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Rio Mesa 61, Righetti 43--Amy Woodward had 25 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks and Marion Jones added 23 points in Rio Mesa’s third-round consolation-bracket victory in the Thousand Oaks tournament.
