KATELLA KLASSIC : Western Remains Unbeaten, Advances

Katella High School had only Kevin Carlson’s legs to stand on Friday night in the semifinals of the Katella Klassic, and even his 29 points weren’t enough as Western improved its record to 10-0 with a 71-54 victory over the host Knights. “We found out we’re good in Anaheim,” Western Coach Greg Hoffman said, “(Tonight) we’ll find out if we’re any good elsewhere.”

Western faces Long Beach Millikan in the championship game at 8 tonight. Katella (7-4) plays Inglewood for third place at 6:30 p.m.

Carlson, a 6-foot-5, 145-pound guard, kept Katella close early by scoring 12 of his team’s 16 first-quarter points, keeping the Knights within one point at the end of the first quarter.

But Western countered with a balanced attack, getting contributions from all its starters.

Forward Thomas Barraza led the team with 26 points, while point guard Chris Jackson had seven assists. Forward Nurishi Stevenson added 10 points and seven rebounds, and the other starting guard, Steve Siefken, scored 20 points.

Servite 68, Konawaena (Hawaii) 47--Servite coasted to an easy victory to advance to the consolation final at 5 p.m. today against Bishop Montgomery, which defeated Bell in the other consolation semifinal.

Servite Coach Richard Smith rested his starters for the majority of the game, with reserve forward Ryan Dodd leading the Friars with 12 points.
