COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Martin’s 32 Points Help Rancho Santiago Advance

Forward Erik Martin scored a season-high 32 points Friday in Rancho Santiago College’s 103-84 victory over Santa Monica College in a semifinal game in the Rancho Santiago Holiday Tournament.

It was the 14th consecutive victory for Rancho Santiago (17-1). Santa Monica had defeated Rancho Santiago to break the Dons’ 17-game winning streak last season in the tournament title game.

The top two teams in the state could have met in tonight’s final, but No. 2 Long Beach lost to L.A. City, 97-91, in the other semifinal Friday.

L.A. City (15-2), the No. 10 team, plays Rancho Santiago at 8 p.m. for the title.

Santa Monica (12-5) plays Long Beach (17-3) at 6 p.m. for third place.

Martin was 12 of 16 and hit eight of nine free throws. He had 11 rebounds, seven offensive, three assists and three blocked shots.

Corie Blount added 24 points on nine-of-17 shooting from the field. He had seven rebounds and four assists.

In another Rancho Santiago tournament game:

Saddleback 94, Skagit Valley (Wash.) 79--Saddleback trailed, 40-34, at the half but shot 64.7% (22 of 34) and outscored Skagit Valley, 60-39, in the second half.

Matt Thompson scored 23 points and added 14 rebounds for Saddleback (8-7). Kenny Caesar and Greg Reynolds had 17 points each for Saddleback.

Reynolds was five of six on three-pointers and has made 10 in two games in the tournament. Saddleback, which plays Mt. San Antonio for the consolation championship at 4 p.m. today, had only seven turnovers.

In the San Diego Mesa tournament:

Orange Coast 69, Phoenix 65--Orange Coast (8-7) fell behind, 21-2, but rallied. Rich Hughes led OCC with 15 points. OCC plays San Diego Mesa at 2 p.m. today for the consolation title.

In the Santa Rosa Tournament:

City College San Francisco 92, Cypress 83--Eric Pauley scored 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks, but Cypress (12-7) lost.

Brian Kenney added 24 for Cypress, which had no other players in double figures.

In the Fullerton women’s tournament:

Fullerton 90, Ohlone 71--Nicki Durity scored 18 points for Fullerton (13-2), which plays College of the Sequoias in one semifinal at 6 p.m. tonight.

In the De Anza women’s tournament:

San Mateo 65, Orange Coast 50--Erika Manning scored 18 points for OCC (10-8), which lost in one championship semifinal. Kami Bigler added 10 for OCC, which trailed at the half, 30-25.
