COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Middleton’s 33 Help Chapman Take Title

Rog Middleton scored 33 points as Chapman College defeated Texas A&I;, 82-69, for the title of the Chico Tournament Saturday at Chico State.

Middleton, a junior forward, was 10 of 19 from the field and 13 of 15 on free-throw attempts. Middleton also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Chapman was most impressive from the field, shooting 58.5% (31 of 53) for the game.

Zlatko Josic added 14 on seven-of-10 shooting and Frantz Reyes had 13 as he made five-of-nine shots. Andre Hill had 10 points and Chuck McGavran had 12 assists also for the Panthers.

Charles Mims scored 29 for Texas A&I; (7-4), which shot 43.4% (25 of 58). Texas A&I; was only nine of 26 (34.6%) on three-pointers.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Concordia Portland 81, Christ College of Irvine 65--Forward Dick Downard scored 19 points to lead visiting Concordia Portland. Concordia Portland outscored Christ College of Irvine, 44-32, in the second half after holding a 37-33 first-half lead. Guard Jamie McShan had 20 points for Christ College of Irvine (6-9).

In a nonconference men’s game:

Southern California College 82, Carthage 79--Jeff Bickmore had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Bryan Moore scored 19 points for host SCC (11-2), which led all the way. Carthage (6-2) was led by Randolph Williams’ 19 points.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Butler 81, UC Irvine 72--Julie Von Dielingen scored 24 points to lead Butler (10-0) at UC Irvine (2-7).

Yvonne Catala scored 16 points, Geanine Hobbs scored 15 and Jenny Lee 13 for UC Irvine, which was hindered by its poor shooting percentage (36.4%).
