ROUNDUP : Kayaoglu’s Free Throws Give Rio Mesa 62-60 Upset

Manuk Kayaoglu hit two free throws with three seconds to play as host Rio Mesa stunned Santa Barbara, 62-60, Wednesday night in a Channel League opener.

Santa Barbara (10-3) is considered among the state’s best teams, but Rio Mesa (4-7) outscored the Dons, 17-6, in the final period. Kayaoglu finished with a team-high 20 points and six assists.

Greg Bellman scored 16 points and had eight steals for Rio Mesa.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Buena 70, Dos Pueblos 40--Buena’s Lance Fay had five three-point baskets, five two-point field goals and five free throws to score 30 points in the Channel League opener. Josh Evarts added 12 points for host Buena (7-4).

Ventura 68, Oxnard 56--Randy Martinez scored 29 points and Jon Seiler added 15 for Ventura (5-5, 1-0) in a Channel League opener.

Thousand Oaks 80, Newbury Park 54--Thousand Oaks (10-1) made 12 of 21 shots in the first quarter and jumped out to a 28-9 lead in a Marmonte League opener. The Lancers led, 53-23, at halftime.

Channel Islands 64, Westlake 63--Marlowe Durmiendo scored a team-high 20 points for Channel Islands (9-2), which held a 50-41 lead after three quarters and held off a late rally in a Marmonte League opener at Westlake.

Notre Dame 89, Chaminade 66--G.C. Marcaccini scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and teammate Bob DaCorsi scored 13 points in his first game back from injury as host Notre Dame (10-3) won a Mission League opener.

St. Bernard 105, Alemany 79--St. Bernard raced to a 50-27 halftime lead in the Mission League opener.

St. Bonaventure 54, Oak Park 37--Forward Todd Tushla had 22 points and 10 rebounds for St. Bonaventure (4-7, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League opener.

Glendale 62, Bishop Amat 54--Glendale made 13 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter in the nonleague game.

L.A. Baptist 46, Canyon 39--Alex Pistone scored 17 points and Dane Brown grabbed 15 rebounds to lead L.A. Baptist (4-7) to an upset in a nonleague game.

Saugus 74, Hoover 65--Geoff Dains paced Saugus (11-4) with 18 points in the nonleague game. Dave Ulloa scored a game-high 35 points for Hoover.

Montclair Prep 82, Murphy 59--J. T. Billingslea made 12 of 17 shots from floor to lead Montclair Prep (8-2) in a nonleague game.

Harvard 80, Brentwood 72--Harvard’s Markus Puhvel led all scorers with 26 points in the nonleague game at Harvard.

Bishop Montgomery 102, Crespi 60--Bishop Montgomery turned the tables on high-scoring Crespi, holding the visiting Celts to 31 points below their season average in the Mission League opener.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Occidental 92, Millikin 86--Junior guard Jacqui Dent scored a team-high 22 points to lead Occidental in a nonleague game.

Pierce 59, Santa Barbara 41--Pierce (14-2) limited Santa Barbara to two field goals in the first half of a nonconference game.

Notre Dame 3, Chaminade 2--Chris Gervais, Armen Mitilian, and Jon Arroyo each scored goals for host Notre Dame (4-3-1) in a Mission League opener.
