The Cleveland Browns today named Coach Jim Shofner as the team’s new director of player personnel.

Shofner’s new duties will include evaluating players currently on the team as well as those in the NFL and in the college ranks, team owner Art Modell announced in a statement.

“I’ll miss some of the coaching aspects, but I know the challenges in this new job will keep me hopping,” Shofner said.

Shofner, 55, became interim head coach in November after Bud Carson was fired. Shofner had been the team’s offensive coordinator. He was the Browns’ quarterback coach from 1978 to ’80 and played defensive back for the team from 1958 to ’63.

The Browns ended this season with a 3-13 record, the franchise’s worst.

Shofner had said during the season that he expected to take a post with the team’s front office.

Team officials have said a new coach probably won’t be named until sometime in February.
