Council Delays Action on Proposed Panel

Brushing aside protests from a civic group, the Santa Clarita City Council has postponed action on a proposal to create a citizens’ committee to advise the council on transportation issues.

The civic group, which has yet to adopt a formal name, said a city-sponsored advisory committee was needed because a 20-year-old chamber of commerce transportation committee caters to business interests. The civic group recommended the creation of an 11-member advisory committee representing a cross-section of the community.

But the city manager’s office opposed formation of the committee, saying it would hinder public communication with the council. The council Wednesday tabled the recommendation until Santa Clarita finishes a master development guide that will take at least six months to complete.
