Hawthorne police Thursday were searching for a lone suspect who escaped on foot after attempting to rob an armored car guard outside a Bank of America branch at 126th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard.

The armed suspect, described as a male in his late 30s or early 40s, approached the guard for Loomis Armored Inc. at 10:20 a.m. as he was making a delivery, Hawthorne Police Lt. Jan Ogden said.

The suspect did not draw his weapon but attempted to grab the guard’s handgun, Ogden said. A struggle ensued, during which the guard fired five rounds, she said.

Ogden said the suspect escaped after retrieving his own handgun, which fell to the pavement during the scuffle. The guard was not hurt, and police found no evidence that the suspect had been injured, she said.
