SOUTH COUNTY : 25 Are Arrested at Sobriety Stops

Share

Orange County sheriff’s deputies arrested 25 motorists suspected of driving while intoxicated at sobriety checkpoints in two South County cities over the holidays.

More than 5,000 vehicles were stopped at five checkpoints set up in Laguna Niguel and Mission Viejo. A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department called the program a success, saying its goal is to educate drivers about the hazards of drunk driving.

“Our feeling is that this is always a positive thing to do, even if people are not arrested for drunk driving,” said Lt. Richard J. Olson of the Sheriff’s Department. “There’s that hope that (the checkpoints) will deter people from drinking and driving.”

Arrest figures were not yet available for Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano, where sobriety checkpoints were also set up during the holidays.
