Share

A Bonita man was killed after a runaway UPS truck collided with the vehicle he was riding in Friday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

Robert Cowley was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy hospital.

Officers said a UPS driver parked his truck in front of a residence and went inside about 4 p.m. When he returned, he saw his truck rolling down the hill. The truck collided with a car at Central Avenue and Belle Bonnie Brae, injuring driver Lynn Groutage of Bonita and fatally injuring Cowley, the passenger. Groutage’s car spun and hit another car, driven by David Baker, also of Bonita.

The UPS truck continued rolling and landed in a ditch.

Groutage and Baker were taken to UCSD Medical Center. Both were wearing seat belts.
