Two of the South Bay’s top high school football players have given oral commitments to colleges, but most area standouts are just beginning to take recruiting visits.

Carson High quarterback John Walsh said Thursday that he will attend Brigham Young University, and Serra running back-defensive back Jerald Henry committed to USC several weeks ago.

Prep seniors can sign letters of intent, which officially bind them to a college, beginning Feb. 6.

All-state running back Travis Davis of Banning is visiting Washington this weekend. It is the second recruiting trip for Davis, who visited USC last month. He also plans to visit Stanford, Notre Dame and UCLA.

Carson safety Tarriel Hopper, another all-state selection, said he has narrowed his choices to Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska and Arizona. He said he will take his first recruiting trip Jan. 18 to Colorado.

“Most likely I’ll be going away,” said the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Hopper. “I want to get away from L.A. and see something else.”

Hopper said he is awaiting the results of his second Scholastic Aptitude Test. He scored 690 on the first test, 10 points short of an NCAA-qualifying score of 700. “I’m sure I’ll get it,” he said.

Another Carson standout, receiver-defensive back Abdul Muhammad, is taking his first recruiting trip this weekend to Texas-El Paso. He also plans to visit USC, Miami, Oregon and Nebraska.

Rolling Hills running back Robert Coulter, a two-time All-CIF selection, said he will visit Washington next weekend and Arizona the following week. Coulter, who is awaiting the result of his SAT, said he is also considering California and Tennessee.

Torrance offensive lineman Wade Owens, an All-CIF choice, is visiting Oregon this weekend on his first recruiting trip. He plans to visit Cal State Long Beach next weekend.

Brigham Young Coach LaVell Edwards would not comment on reports that Carson’s Walsh is the only freshman quarterback the Cougars are recruiting.

“We feel real good (about getting Walsh),” Edwards said. “He’s a very nice young man. Aside from that, I can’t make any comment.”
