ROUNDUP : Canyon Wrestlers Capture Estancia Tournament Title

Top-ranked Canyon won the team title at the Estancia wrestling tournament with 207 points Saturday at Estancia.

Canyon’s Matt Padgett won the 160-pound title and was named wrestler of the meet for the upper weight division. Teammate Tom McCullough won the 125-pound title.

Canyon Springs (146) finished second, Irvine (134) was third, El Modena (113.5) fourth and Valencia (105.5) fifth. The tournament started Friday and 40 schools participated.

Danny Wells (119), Danny Santana (145) and Erik Jacobs (171) each won their weight divisions for El Modena.

In Sunset League girls’ basketball:

Ocean View 48, Santa Ana 22--Tricia Lindquist scored 10 points for Ocean View (9-6, 1-1). Santa Ana is 5-6, 0-2.

Marina 84, Westminster 39--Leslie Ono had 18 points and six assists and Aimee Periolat scored 14 points for host Marina (11-4, 2-0). Lori Yoshizaki scored 13 for Westminster, which trailed, 13-1, early in the game and, 30-7, after one quarter.

In Olympic League girls’ basketball::

Whitney 49, Capistrano Valley Christian 48--Chrissy Mukai made a layup at the buzzer to give host Whitney (5-4, 1-1) the victory. Kristen Ebright scored 17 points for Whitney. Hester Daniels had 12 for Capistrano Valley Christian (8-2, 1-1).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Century 47, La Mirada 30--Gabby Mendoza scored 16 points and Yessenia Cota 14 for visiting Century (4-6).

In Angelus League boys’ soccer:

Mater Dei 2, Servite 0--Chris Campbell and Luis Cevallos scored for Mater Dei (11-3, 1-0). Bill Stasiewicz had 10 saves for Servite (2-8-3, 0-1). Tom Evans had four saves for Mater Dei, which has won or tied 17 consecutive league games against Servite.

In Sunset League boys’ soccer:

Fountain Valley 2, Edison 0--P.J. Polowski scored twice in the second half for visiting Fountain Valley (10-1-4, 2-0). Ryan Bertoni had seven saves for Fountain Valley and Taylor Marcus had six for Edison. Fountain Valley has played five consecutive games against teams ranked in the top 10 and has won four and tied one.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Foothill 1, Tustin 0--Kathy Shortall scored with about 10 minutes left for Foothill (5-6-2). Foothill goalkeeper Julie Ehret had five saves. Tustin is 0-8-2.
