Today’s News, Tomorrow’s Television : Lemmon is ‘Getting There’ for HBO; Ellerbee puts on her ‘Sunday Best’ for NBC.

Brian Dennehy, Cloris Leachman and Marcia Gay Harden (“Miller’s Crossing”) have completed production on the NBC drama “In Broad Daylight,” for telecast later in the season. Based on a true story, the movie focuses on small-town residents terrorized by a bully and who take justice into their own hands.

Two-time Oscar-winner actor Jack Lemmon has been signed to star in the HBO Pictures comedy, “Getting There,” which will be directed by Jay Sandrich of “The Mary Tyler Moore” and “Taxi” fame.

Scheduled to begin production in the spring, “Getting There” finds Lemmon playing a self-made millionaire who decides to go bankrupt in order to experience the challenge and fun of making a million all over again.

The irreverent Linda Ellerbee will return to NBC on “Sunday Best,” the network’s new comedic look at the week that was premiering Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. Ellerbee will produce and appear in her own live segments on the series.

Episodes of the ABC series “Life Goes On” and “MacGyver,” the premiere presentation of “ABC’s World of Discovery” series and a special segment of “ABC’s World News Tonight With Peter Jennings” will receive Genesis Awards next month.

The Genesis Awards are given annually to honor “outstanding individuals in the media whose artistry and integrity have increased our understanding of animal issues.”

Ron Perlman narrates (“Beauty and the Beast”) “Red Express,” the next special in “ABC’s World of Discovery” series, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. The documentary takes a trip on the Trans Siberian railway through seven time zones in the Soviet Union, from Europe to Asia.

Singer-songwriter Carole King and David (Davy) Jones of the Monkees fame are filming “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll,” an “ABC Afterschool Special” about a young girl who creates a storm of controversy when she writes lyrics that are perceived as suggestive.

Kirstie Alley and Robert Townsend will host “The Movies Awards,” yet another awards show “reflecting the tastes” of moviegoers, to air Jan. 30 on CBS.

“The Movie Awards” will feature 16 categories based on the top 10 grossing films of 1990.
