Poway’s Reid Commits to Oregon

Poway High’s Eric Reid orally committed Sunday to accept a football scholarship to the University of Oregon.

Reid, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound center for the Titans, took his first recruiting trip over the weekend and reached an agreement with Oregon Coach Rich Brooks. Reid will sign a national letter of intent in early February.

“(Brooks) told me I’d have a chance to play early in my career,” Reid said.

Reid was a first team all-Palomar League lineman and a Times’ second-team selection. He also was named Poway’s most valuable lineman.

“I feel very confident I did the right thing,” he said. “That’s a program on the rise, and I feel they’ll be up there this year.

“I really like the atmosphere of the town (Eugene, Ore.), and felt it would give me a better chance to concentrate on my grades. And it’s a really good football town.

“It’s also in the Pac-10, and I really wasn’t talking to any Pac-10 schools.”

Reid, who plans to major in human services, said he will cancel recruiting trips to San Diego State, Fresno State and Brigham Young.
