NBA ROUNDUP : Spurs Rally, Down 76ers in Overtime

Share

The San Antonio Spurs are one of only six teams in the NBA that have winning records on the road this season.

After rallying from a six-point deficit to tie in regulation, the Spurs dominated the overtime Monday night and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, 111-102.

David Robinson, who is making himself at home wherever he plays, had 31 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Spurs to their ninth road victory in their last 10 games. The Midwest Division leaders are 12-5 on the road; only Portland (12-3) is better.

The 76ers, trying to shake a slump, led, 93-87, with 3:28 remaining in regulation. A three-point basket by Sean Elliott brought the Spurs back, but three points by Charles Barkley gave the 76ers a 96-94 lead. With 12 seconds to play, Rod Strickland made two free throws to send it into overtime.

A three-point basket by Willie Anderson gave the Spurs a 103-100 lead and Robinson followed with six consecutive free throws to clinch the victory.

Barkley had 31 points and Hersey Hawkins 30, but the 76ers lost for the fifth time in the last six games.

Armon Gilliam, acquired from Charlotte in a trade Friday, had 15 points in his Philadelphia debut.

The Spurs played without Terry Cummings, who has a groin injury.

Phoenix 119, Minnesota 106--The Suns, who scored only 12 points during the fourth quarter Saturday night at Milwaukee and blew a 10-point lead, welcomed back Tom Chambers at Minneapolis.

Chambers, who was sidelined for three games because of a hamstring injury, and Kevin Johnson each scored nine points during a 38-point first quarter that sent the Suns to their ninth road victory in 16 games. The Suns had a 22-9 lead after six minutes.

Chambers had 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Johnson had 27 points and 14 assists.

Minnesota cut the lead to 67-61 in the third quarter, but Chambers made eight points in an 11-2 run.

Dallas 88, New Jersey 87--The Nets looked on helplessly as Rolando Blackman broke free with less than two seconds left in overtime at East Rutherford, N.J.

Blackman’s desperate shot from three-point range swished through and the Nets lost their seventh in a row.

Also among Blackman’s 15 points were two on a jumper with 24 seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime.

Orlando 111, Sacramento 83--Perhaps the opposition had something to do with it. Against the Spurs Saturday at Orlando, the Magic shot only 29.8% from the field, worst in the NBA this season.

On the same court, the Magic shot 52.5% to hand the Kings their 14th road loss in 15 games.
