COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Abraham Wins 100th as Coach at Moorpark

Moorpark College resumed its winning ways, and Canyons continued to struggle as Moorpark won, 79-63, in a women’s Western State Conference interdivisional game Tuesday night at Canyons.

Moorpark scored the first 12 points of the second half to help ensure Coach Gary Abraham’s 100th victory at the school. Abraham is in his fifth season.

The outcome virtually had been decided when Canyons Coach Jeff Dunlap took an early exit midway through the second half.

Referee Bob Branson gave Dunlap four consecutive technical fouls and an automatic ejection when Dunlap argued a foul call.

Moorpark’s Donna Houck went to the line for eight free throws and made five to give Moorpark a 62-33 lead.

Canyons (9-9), which made the state final eight last season, fell to .500 for the first time this season.

In other women’s games:

Valley 62, Cuesta 54--Three players scored in double figures to help the Monarchs (17-3) defeat Cuesta (12-7) at Valley.

Bakersfield 83, Ventura 69--Vanessa Hackett scored a game-high 26 points for Ventura but the Pirates lost the nonconference game at Bakersfield.

Ventura also lost Nicole Ellis, its top rebounder and second-leading scorer, eight minutes into the game because of a sprained ankle.

Claremont 69, Occidental 65--Dawn Gigstad (14 points), Sharon Wada (12) and Janet Hubbell (12) led Occidental (5-7) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Occidental.

MEN

West L.A. 66, Oxnard 63--The Condors let an eight-point lead slip away in the final 10 minutes in a nonconference loss at Oxnard.

Valley 82, Cuesta 59--Tory Stephens scored 23 points and Russell Baldwin added 15 and nine rebounds for Valley (11-9) in a WSC interdivision game.
