Chuck Fick, 35, of Newbury Park, a catcher with the San Bernardino Pride of the now-defunct Senior Professional Baseball Assn., was leading the team with a .342 batting average when the league folded Dec. 19.
Fick also had a league-high nine doubles in 25 games and threw out 11 of 16 runners attempting to steal. He was named player of the week in early December after going 10 for 15.
An actor by trade and a part-time scout for the Cincinnati Reds, Fick indicated that he would call front offices in coming weeks in an effort to revive his aspirations of playing in the major leagues. Fick played in the Montreal Expos and Oakland Athletics organizations from 1979-83 but never advanced beyond triple A.
“I feel deep down in my heart that I can play in the major leagues this year,” he said. “I see catchers in the major leagues, and I feel that I could help a club.”
