VALLEY ROUNDUP : Ventura Races to an Easy Win Over Glendale

Share

Ventura College ran its fast break to perfection in running Glendale College out of the gym Monday, rolling to 99-61 Western State Conference men’s basketball victory at Ventura.

With the interdivisional win, Ventura (20-4) completed a sweep of its six games against Southern Division foes.

Freshman forward Calvin Curry, whose first start launched a six-game Pirate winning streak, led the way with 24 points, taking scoring and rebounding pressure off sophomore Lester Neal, who finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

“Calvin’s getting better and better,” Ventura Coach Phil Mathews said. “As he improves, so does the team.”

The Pirates started the game by scoring 10 unanswered points, six coming from Neal. Glendale (8-12) tried to stay close behind the strong play of Enoch Mack, who scored 18 points, and Chris Cooke, who had 10. Cooke’s 18-foot jumper with 15 minutes 11 seconds left in the first half cut Ventura’s lead to 18-10, and it looked for a moment like the Vaqueros could pose a challenge.

But Curry killed that hope with a three-point basket his next trip down the floor.

Also contributing for the Pirates were Uba Satterfield, with 15 points, DiJon Bernard, with 13, and Jerry Dalton with eight assists.
