HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Reseda Trips Taft Behind Burns’ Shooting

Led by red-hot Marquis Burns’ game-high 26 points, Reseda High scored a 71-70 upset victory over Taft in double overtime Wednesday in a Northwest Valley Conference basketball game at Taft.

Burns, a junior swingman, made two free throws with two seconds left in the second overtime to give Reseda (7-7, 2-2 in league play) the victory. Burns is averaging 27 points over his past three games.

After trailing early, Taft twice opened up a five-point lead in the fourth quarter but could not put the Regents away as Burns hit three three-point shots in the final period.

Casey Sheahan scored a team-high 18 points for Taft (11-5, 3-1), which played without starting center James Wade, who was sidelined because of pneumonia.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Granada Hills 72, El Camino Real 61--Jerry Allen scored a game-high 22 points and added eight assists and four blocks to lead the Highlanders in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Gene Barshstak and Jevon Lee each contributed 10 points for Granada Hills (15-2, 4-0), which trailed, 28-27, at halftime. Jaffers Bailey paced the Conquistadores with 17 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks before fouling out early in the fourth period.

Canoga Park 88, Monroe 86--Lindsey Dunbar buried a 15-foot jump shot from the free-throw line at the buzzer to lift Canoga Park to a Valley Pac-8 Conference win at Monroe. Chris Ofstad and Steve Woodruff combined for 48 points and Ofstad added 16 rebounds for Canoga Park (7-11, 4-4).

Stanley Deal scored a game-high 30 points for Monroe and Ronald Falls added 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Van Nuys 62, North Hollywood 46--Michael Crawford scored 35 points, making five three-point baskets, for Van Nuys (10-5, 5-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. North Hollywood scoring leader Robert Hill, who averages 18 points, was held to 10. The Huskies (9-7, 5-3) were held to six points in the second quarter and eight in the third.

Kennedy 56, San Fernando 31--Kennedy outscored San Fernando, 16-2, in the second period of the Northwest Valley Conference game and limited the Tigers to six points in the third quarter.

Alan Johnson had 12 points, 14 rebounds and five assists for Kennedy (9-8, 2-2). No player scored more than seven points for San Fernando (4-12, 0-4).

Camarillo 72, Simi Valley 67--David Harbour scored 10 of his team-high 31 points in the fourth quarter and teammate David Nathaniel (22 points) made six of seven free throws in the quarter to stave off Simi Valley in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Mike Crawford scored a game-high 33 points for Simi Valley (8-9, 3-3). The win kept Camarillo (11-3, 5-1) tied for first place in league play with Channel Islands.

Thousand Oaks 74, Westlake 39--Thousand Oaks held Westlake to less than 10 points in three separate quarters of the Marmonte League game at Westlake (5-10, 2-4). The Lancers built a 17-2 first-quarter lead. Chris Loll scored 20 points and Brian Capella added 17 for Thousand Oaks (13-3, 4-2). Scott Simpson had eight steals for the Lancers.

Rio Mesa 63, Ventura 60--Rio Mesa made 19 of 21 free throws in a Channel League game at Ventura. Jon Seiler scored 21 points for Ventura (8-7, 4-2), which made just 18 of 31 free throws. Greg Bellman scored 21 points for Rio Mesa (7-9, 4-2).

San Marcos 97, Buena 86--Lance Fay (26 points) and Matt Egan (18) led Buena (9-7, 3-3), which fell in a Channel League game at home. Phil Staten of San Marcos (15-2, 6-0) scored 12 points in the third quarter spark a 33-21 outburst. Zak DeMatteo had 25 points and Rob Ramaker had 27 for San Marcos.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 72, Van Nuys 49--North Hollywood (15-3, 8-0) took control of the pivotal Mid-Valley League game in the second period, outscoring Van Nuys (14-4, 7-1), 20-8, to take a 36-24 lead at halftime.

Jenna Karimoto scored eight of her 11 points in the second period for North Hollywood, and teammate Rachel Fogelhut scored all eight of her points in the third quarter, when the Huskies extended their lead to 61-36.

Cicely Brewster scored 17 points for Van Nuys.

Kennedy 67, San Fernando 44--Shaneya Harris had 31 points and 20 rebounds for Kennedy in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Cleveland 48, Chatsworth 32--Amy Horst and Erika Kusek each scored 14 points and Horst added 16 rebounds for Cleveland (6-2, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chatsworth 3, El Camino Real 0--Ever since El Camino Real tied Chatsworth in the regular-season finale last year, the Conquistadores figured to be the team to end Chatsworth’s two-year reign as City Section champion.

Such was not the case in the Valley Conference match. “We just played at another level tonight,” Chatsworth Coach Steve Berk said.

Mary Oades scored twice and Heather Gorman added another score to lead Chatsworth (11-0, 7-0) before about 300 spectators.

Chatsworth, which has not lost in 24 consecutive games, assaulted El Camino Real with 20 shots on goal and allowed the Conquistadores (10-1, 6-1) only two.

Louisville 1, Notre Dame 0--Cindy Daws scored in the first minute of game in the Mission League match at Notre Dame (6-5-2, 3-2-1). Ashley Wire recorded five saves for Louisville (12-2-1, 4-0).

Chaminade 1, Bishop Montgomery 0--Rebecca Lata scored the lone goal in the Mission League match at Bishop Montgomery. Goalkeeper Heather Salzer recorded her 11th shutout for Chaminade (11-1-4, 3-1), ranked ninth in the Southern Section 3-A poll.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Kennedy 5, San Fernando 1--Alex Sawatzke scored twice for Kennedy as the Golden Cougars (4-1-8, 3-1-2) tightened the race for the North Valley League title at Kennedy. San Fernando dropped to 8-2-1, 4-1-1.
